Cancer Program
Serving Western Orange and Sullivan Counties, NY,
Northern Sussex County, NJ, and Pike County, PA.
Initially approved as a Community Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer in the late 1970’s, being the first in the area to receive this accreditation. Approval has been maintained to current date. It is felt that the institutions involved with the approvals process represent a broad-based network of comprehensive cancer programs to include the entire spectrum of cancer control activities from prevention to rehabilitation and long-term follow-up. Goal being the improvement of quality patient care through multidisciplinary cancer programs concerned with the prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease and multiple primary tumors, psychosocial support, and the hospice concept.
Our program includes:
A multidisciplinary Cancer Committee that meets at least quarterly to coordinate all cancer activities within our facility. Our CC consists of physician members from medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, pathology, surgery, internal medicine, family practice, cardiology, pediatrics, gynecology, and gastroenterology with participants also from the non-physician area including administration, nursing, dietary, social services, health information, cancer registry, medical care review and quality management, and rehabilitation.
Twice monthly Tumor Board/Cancer Conferences with multidisciplinary attendance with physicians from all appropriate disciplines to discuss all major cancer sites representing the institutions case mix.
Physician participants are awarded Category I Continuing Medical Education Credits sponsored by the Medical Society County of Orange.
Two in-house Patient Care Evaluation Studies are performed each year under the direction of the Cancer Committee, as well as participation in studies on the national level with the NCDB (National Cancer Data Base). The NCDB is the governing board responsible for national studies of patient management and outcome.
An annual report on the entire spectrum of the program is produced each year. This includes a narrative of activities, as well as in depth statistical review with comparisons with national and local data. Each report also includes a site focus study which a through review of that particular site of disease with statistical review and analysis and rate of survival.
