Your pregnancy and the birth of your baby will be one of the most joyous experiences of your lifetime. At Bon Secours Community Hospital we are honored to have the opportunity to share this special event with you and your family. Our staff of highly skilled Obstetricians and Registered Nurses work hard to provide a warm, caring environment to help ensure that you have a safe and memorable childbirth experience.

We offer many services that are designed for expectant parents and the newborn. Please give us a call to learn more about Obstetric Care at Bon Secours Community Hospital.

The warmth and expert skills of our staff will guide you through a safe and memorable beginning with your newest family member. We are looking forward to meeting and caring for you and your family.

ANESTHESIA OPTIONS

The Department of Anesthesia is proud to play a part in the delivery of your baby. An anesthesiologist specially trained for maternal emergencies is available 24 hours a day for the comfort and safety of the mothers. We recognize that childbirth is an individual process and that every woman’s wishes and needs are different. There are several options available to you:

Lamaze Childbirth Preparation:
This relaxing and breathing technique, often called “natural childbirth”, is designed to reduce the perception of pain during labor.

Medications:
Different types of medications are available and may be ordered by your obstetrician
to ease labor pain.

Epidural Anesthesia:
This popular anesthesia method provides continuous pain relief during labor and delivery and is safe and effective. A small tube is placed in your lower back, allowing your anesthesiologist to administer medication to “block” the pain of labor. Pain management is an individualized process to meet each patient’s needs. These pain relief techniques can be used alone or in tandem. Mothers may begin with natural childbirth, then decide to have epidural anesthesia as labor progresses. Should you require a Cesarean Section, an epidural/spinal or general anesthesia is used depending on your medical needs. After a Cesarean Section, each patient is followed by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist to ensure a post-operative comfort level that allows mother and baby to bond.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE PROCESS

After your baby is born, the hospital will apply for your baby’s birth certificate. Please complete the sheet enclosed in this package to expedite the birth certificate application process. Please provide complete information for all sections. If the information is incomplete, there will be a delay in obtaining your baby’s birth certificate.

The birth certificate sheet will be returned to you after delivery to complete your infant’s name, delivery information and make any necessary corrections. Once this information is completed by the hospital, the City Clerk’s Office will process your birth certificate. Your baby’s birth certificate will be mailed to your home. Please allow approximately one month for your baby’s birth certificate to arrive.

If you’d like the hospital to apply for your baby’s Social Security number, please sign the Social Security Release section of the booklet.  Please note that we must have your baby’s full name at the time of your discharge to apply for the baby’s Social Security number. The baby’s Social Security number and card may take four to six months to be processed. If you would like to receive the card sooner, you may apply for it in person at the local Social Security Administration Office. If you will be applying in person, do not sign the Social Security Release. Some out-of-state residents might need to apply for the infant’s social security number in their home state.

CENTER FOR NEW LIFE

At Bon Secours Community Hospital, we have traditionally taken an approach to birth that blends understanding and caring for the varying needs of families with sophisticated, efficient and modern obstetrical practice. This is why our unit has been redesigned to meet your needs. The Center for New Life is a state-of-the-art maternity unit, providing women and their families with a comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere for a positive childbirth experience. The beautiful, single birthing suites at The Center for New Life were built to cater to the needs of expectant parents and their families, providing homelike surroundings for a more natural labor, delivery and recovery. No longer do women need to contend with moving from stretcher to stretcher or room to room during the birth process.

The Center for New Life also has a large, cheerful nursery and several postpartum rooms and gynecological rooms. Board-certified obstetrical physicians and certified nursing staff complete the Center. At The Center for New Life, you can expect the best care before, during, and after the birth of your baby.

Fathers at Birth
Fathers may be present in the delivery suite with physician consent. Generally, nature does a good job with pregnancy and birth and the vast majority of deliveries proceed without serious problems. However, if a complication should arise, your partner in labor and delivery may be asked to wait outside the delivery suite for a brief period. You will be reunited as soon as medically possible. Safe outcomes for you and your baby are our foremost concern.

Rooming-In
Your baby can be with you in your room. Please discuss your wishes with your nurse. Because new mothers need their rest, babies may be returned to the nursery at any time.Nursery charges are not affected by a parent’s choice of rooming in.

Demand Breast Feeding
Breast feeding is encouraged and suggested. Most babies are demand fed. The nursing staff will provide assistance with breast and bottle feeding.

CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION

Your Maternity Consultant will review our classes with you and help you select the best ones for you and your family. Knowing what to expect during and after pregnancy can reduce apprehensions and better prepare you for the demands of parenting. Our classes typically run in five week series, four times a year (January, April, July and October).  Each series of classes is available at no cost — unless otherwise noted — and generally includes lectures, videos, and guest speakers.

Tours:
Tours of The Center for New Life will be arranged by a registered professional nurse who is specially trained in women’s health, or your Maternity Consultant. The tour will help you understand what happens when you come to the hospital and make you comfortable and familiar with The Center for New Life.

A New Life – Prenatal Class:
Held in five parts, this course is recommended during the first six months of pregnancy. It covers the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, fetal growth and development, prenatal medical care including tests, examinations, nutrition, exercise, health hazards and sexuality, lectures on Cesarean section, normal newborn, and discussion on breast-feeding. This series of classes is available four times a year.

Prepared Childbirth – The Lamaze Method:
Lamaze is a method of childbirth preparation that teaches strategies for managing labor physiologically for greater control and easier delivery. Fathers or other coaches who complete the course play a key role in labor and delivery, offering encouragement, active help, and support right up to the moment of birth. Generally,
women enroll in these classes during the final trimester and after taking the New Life Classes. An independent certified instructor teaches the five session program and couples are advised to register early. A nominal fee is charged.

Pre-Admission Planning:
Your Maternity Consultant will work closely with you to complete all pre-admission procedures and to plan your pregnancy educational courses.

Fathers at Birth:
Fathers may be present in the delivery suite with physician consent. Generally, nature does a good job with pregnancy and birth and the vast majority of deliveries proceed without serious problems. However, if a complication should arise, your partner in labor and delivery may be asked to wait outside the delivery suite for a brief period. You will be reunited as soon as medically possible. Safe outcomes for you and your baby are our foremost concern.

Refresher Lamaze
Designed for couples who have already given birth by the Lamaze method, the program reviews breathing and relaxation techniques, mechanisms of labor and delivery. There is a fee payable upon registration. This is offered by an
independent consultant.

Mom’s Having a Baby – Sibling Class:
Having a baby impacts all family members, especially brothers and sisters-to-be. Many parents ask, “How will my children react to the attention and time the new baby will need? Will they still feel loved? How should we handle any jealousies that arise?” This class, for parents and children ages two and up, addresses these and other questions and concerns and encourages youngsters to express their feelings about the expected baby. They learn about the baby’s needs and how they can help. A tour of The Center for New Life to see where “Mommy” and the new baby will be is an important component of the class.  Sibling classes are held four times a year in conjunction with the prenatal classes.

NOTE: In addition to these classes, there are ongoing programs at Bon Secours Community Hospital. Ask your Maternity Consultant for the current listing.
