Nationally Ranked Patient Safety Metrics Achieved by Bon Secours Community Hospital
When facing a medical emergency or diagnosis, it can be critical to have access to comparative hospital data to make informed health care decisions. Hospitals vary on meeting quality metrics and patient safety standards. Knowing a hospital makes safety a priority can comfort patients so they can focus on healing. Bon Secours Community Hospital, in Port Jervis, NY, members of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), have each earned an “A” rating from Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, released by The Leapfrog Group.
The designation recognizes the hospital's efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing quality health care. Patient safety refers to the efforts of clinical providers to reduce or avoid preventable harm during treatment, as well as the need for strategies to keep health risks as low as possible. The Safety Grade assigns grades from A-F to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other damages to patients in their care.
Ratings and Methodology
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are assigned to over 2,700 acute-care hospitals across the nation twice annually. The Safety Grade uses up to 27 national patient safety measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, and information from other supplemental data sources, to produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.
